Curriculum

Orton-Gillingham (OG) Techniques

The traditional OG approach stresses curriculum that is:

  • Structured, sequential, cumulative

    • Methodical, integrated lessons

  • Multi-sensory

    • Activity-oriented lessons with kinesthetics

  • Cognitive

    • Emphasis on analytical skills

  • Flexible, emotionally sound

    • Program at student’s pace

A fifth grader demonstrates “Spelling Gymnastics,” showing how phonics and spelling affect word meaning.

OG techniques guide tutoring content, pace, activities and homework. Lessons proceed efficiently with built-in review to guarantee mastery.

The curriculum is individualized for each student, considering his or her current academic and reading level.

Even though tutoring is intensive, serious work, Joyce Torrey creates a nurturing, relaxed, nonjudgmental environment where students thrive.

“Her program and method of teaching is what we expected at top schools in Hawaii, but those programs are nowhere on par with the program Mrs. Torrey implements daily with her students.”
